Immune Conditions
Immune-related conditions are increasingly common, including autoimmune disease, allergic disorders, and chronic immune dysregulation. While genetics play a role, risk and symptom severity are often influenced by modifiable factors such as diet, gut health, infections, sleep, stress physiology, nutrient status, and environmental exposures.
At The Lauriston Centre, we support clients by identifying key immune drivers and creating a structured, personalised plan to reduce inflammatory load and improve immune resilience—alongside appropriate medical care.
Types of Immune Conditions We Support
Autoimmune Conditions
Autoimmunity occurs when the immune system mistakenly targets the body’s own tissues. Examples include:
Rheumatoid arthritis
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis
Coeliac disease
Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s / ulcerative colitis)
Systemic lupus erythematosus
Multiple sclerosis
Type 1 diabetes
Autoimmune conditions can be associated with fatigue, pain, brain fog, mood changes, and fluctuating symptoms.
Allergic Disorders and Hypersensitivities
Allergic and mast-cell–related patterns can present as:
Eczema / atopic dermatitis
Asthma
Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
Food allergy and histamine intolerance patterns
Hives (urticaria), flushing, itching
Immune Deficiency and Infection Susceptibility
Some individuals experience recurrent or persistent infections due to immune vulnerability or immune exhaustion, including:
Frequent respiratory infections
Recurrent sinus infections or otitis
Recurrent urinary infections, UTI
Poor recovery after viral illness
(We support with nutritional and lifestyle strategies and appropriate testing, while ensuring medical referral when indicated.)
Common Drivers We Assess
Immune conditions rarely have a single cause. We look for patterns across:
1) Gut-Immune Dysfunction
The gut is a major immune interface. Dysbiosis, gut infections, low digestive capacity, and increased permeability can all amplify immune activation. We commonly assess:
Microbiome imbalance and low diversity
Overgrowth patterns (including candida)
Parasites / protozoa (where relevant)
Inflammatory stool markers
Food-trigger patterns and gut barrier support needs
2) Infections as Triggers or Perpetuators
In some individuals, immune symptoms begin or worsen after infection. Where appropriate, we support investigation of relevant infectious triggers (viral and/or bacterial), in collaboration with medical teams when needed.
3) Nutrient Status and Immune Regulation
Immune tolerance and inflammation control depend on adequate micronutrients and protein intake. We frequently evaluate diet quality and, where appropriate, test for or address low status of nutrients such as:
Vitamin D
Zinc
Selenium
Iron status (without assuming supplementation is appropriate)
Omega-3 fatty acids
B vitamins
Magnesium
Protein adequacy
4) Chronic Stress, Sleep, and Immune Balance
Cortisol rhythm disruption, poor sleep, and chronic stress can shift the immune system toward inflammation and reduce resilience. We assess:
Sleep quality and duration
Stress load and recovery capacity
Lifestyle rhythms (meal timing, movement, circadian alignment)
5) Environmental and Dietary Inflammatory Load
For some clients, symptoms are strongly influenced by:
Ultra-processed foods and high sugar intake
Alcohol, additives, and emulsifiers
Environmental exposures (where relevant)
Individual food triggers (not assumed—identified through structured assessment)
How Functional Nutrition Supports Immune Rebalancing
Our goal is not to “stimulate” the immune system, but to support immune regulation—reducing inappropriate activation while improving resilience. Your plan may include:
Targeted nutrition to lower inflammatory signalling
A structured approach to identifying food triggers (including elimination and reintroduction when appropriate)
Gut repair strategies and microbiome support
Nutrient repletion tailored to test results and dietary intake
Sleep, stress, and lifestyle interventions to support immune tolerance
Collaboration with medical care for diagnosis, medication management, or specialist referral when needed
