Functional Medicine

At The Lauriston Centre, we use a Functional Medicine and Functional Nutrition approach to support health by addressing the underlying causes of illness and restoring balance across the body’s systems.

Functional medicine is patient-centred and root-cause focused. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, it seeks to understand why symptoms have developed, recognising that the same diagnosis can have very different causes in different people.

Our approach integrates insights from conventional medicine, nutrition, genetics, biochemistry, and lifestyle factors to create highly personalised and holistic care plans.

Functional medicine views the body as an interconnected system. Imbalances in one area — such as the gut, immune system, hormones, or nervous system — can affect health elsewhere. By understanding these connections, we work to restore regulation, resilience, and long-term wellbeing.

Care is tailored to the individual and informed by detailed case history, clinical assessment, and, where appropriate, functional laboratory testing.

Key Principles of Functional Medicine

Root Cause Focus

Rather than suppressing symptoms, functional medicine aims to identify and address the biological and lifestyle drivers of disease. For example, two people with similar symptoms may require very different interventions if the root causes differ (such as nutrient deficiencies, chronic inflammation, gut dysfunction, or immune dysregulation).

Patient-Centred Care

We work in partnership with our clients. Care plans are personalised based on individual genetics, biochemistry, health history, diet, sleep, stress levels, and environmental exposures.

Whole-System Approach

The body is treated as an integrated system. Gut health can influence mental health, immune balance can affect neurological function, and hormonal imbalances can impact metabolism and mood. Addressing these connections is central to restoring balance.

Preventative and Lifestyle-Oriented

Functional medicine places strong emphasis on prevention and long-term health. Nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, and daily habits are addressed to reduce disease risk and support sustainable health improvements.

Our Aim

By focusing on root causes and the whole person, functional medicine aims to restore optimal health and development, improve quality of life, and support long-term resilience.
